BNWAS-BRIDGE NAVIGATIONAL WATCH ALARM SYSTEM

rajiv_333 asked about Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System and I thought ...hey, we got a vetting remarks for BNWAS and I never went deeper into that. So what is BNWAS or Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System and why was BNWAS required ?

BNWAS was idea of Danish Maritime Authority and they suggested it to monitor bridge activity and to alert the bridge Watchkeeper to reset a particular indicator/alarm. This way the Watchkeeper will be forced to remain alert in their watch even when they are fatigued !! If they do not reset this bridge watch alarm in a particular duration then it would alert another deck officer and/or the captain and if still nobody acknowledges then alerts in full accommodation space. The Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) will hence warn the shipstaff of the incapacity of the watchkeeping officer which may be due to negligence, accident, sickness, fatigue or even security breach (read hijacking).
If not inhibited by the master, the BNWAS should be operational when the ship is in auto-pilot mode.
